The New Cyprus museum was an open competition entry for a museum to display cypriot artifacts spanning thousands of years of human civilization.
The site for the museum is located in the center of Nicosia just outside the medeival city walls.
Our design strategy was to create a connection point through the city that would provide public spaces with technological and educational interventions through which people passing through can be drawn into the history of the island.
the interior of the structure creates visible connections between exhibits, scientific research labs, and archeological excavations. The exhibits are further organized to link different eras and historical events throughout Cyprus’ history to tell a complete and elaborate story of Cyprus’ development.
As copper mining is historically one of the most significant industries in Cyprus, copper is used throughout the spaces, including in the large central void which is clad with a copper mesh embedded with LEDs that can display animations such as a timelapse map of the how various empires throughout history have descended on Cyprus to influence the island nation’s cultural heritage.
