RMM is a municipal museum to celebrate the history and cultural heritage of Riverside, California.

The project entails renovating a historical post office from 1912 and adding flexible square footage to house artifacts and educational events put on by the museum.

Our strategy was to preserve the historical style of the existing building, and to add a modern intervention that would entwine itself through the arcade in back of thee building in order to seamlessly transition between new and old spaces.

The new pavilion is a glass enclosed flexible space with a geometric screen that protects the artifacts from the sun and keeps the interior of the space temperate in the desert climate of Riverside.

The courtyard carved between the new and old building, as well as the garden along the outside of the structures are yet another exhibit of the native landscape and plants of the RIverside area.

Sustainability and celebration of place key roles in our design strategy for The RMM.
